Bilder vom Sport
These “images of sport” are 147 different depictions of athletes in Roman art. The visual theme of sport – from single combat to victory celebrations – is represented in fresco, stucco and mosaic images throughout the Mediterranean region and was popular for centuries.
In this volume the depictions of both light and heavy athletics are collected and fully evaluated for the first time. Individual sports are examined in detail, as are the equipment used and the officials involved. The evaluation concludes with an examination of the images in their contexts.
The iconographical studies are based on a detailed catalogue with a geographical arrangement. Technical details (site of discovery, current location, measurements etc) are followed by examination of the individual depictions and discussion of questions arising from historical research. Finally, the context and dating of each image are described, and each catalogue entry concludes with an extensive bibliography.
The study also includes 2 maps and 85 illustrations of “images of sport”, many of which have seldom been published before.
